NHO NGUYEN
Nho Nguyen is an accomplished artist with a remarkable life journey that has greatly influenced his art. Born and raised in Vietnam, he graduated from the Fine Art National College of Hue, where he honed his artistic skills and developed a deep appreciation for the traditional artistry of his homeland.
Nho's life took a significant turn when he joined the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, where he rose to the rank of platoon leader and served as a second lieutenant. However, the downfall of South Vietnam led to his imprisonment for his service in the South Vietnamese Army. For over six years, Nho endured the hardships of a "re-education camp," where he labored in challenging conditions, including chopping wood and farming, while enduring a sense of hopelessness.
In the spring of 1995, Nho Nguyen's family found refuge in the United States, marking a new chapter in his life. He continued to pursue his passion for art and furthered his studies at Portland Community College. Today, he is a talented designer and artist based in Vancouver, WA.
Artist's Statement
Nho Nguyen's art is a profound expression of his inner world, manifesting itself through various mediums. His work involves the meticulous process of carving deeply into wood boards, a practice that resonates with his heartbeat, echoing through the rhythm of the hammer and chisel. This unique technique often leads to unexpected and delightful accidents where colors like green, red, and yellow settle, stand, sink, and flow within the textured surface. The lines along the edges create dynamic shapes and prisms, forming an entirely new universe on each canvas. Nho's art invites viewers to share in his experiences, and it opens the heart to peaceful horizons.
